Hahahaha. Awesome pic.
To all you haters you are just jealeous that not only do our soldiers own like counterstrike players using wallhacks they are armed like them too.
That would be why early on in Iraq you relied on the British Army's knowledge of counter-insurgency operations in Northern Ireland then, right?

Well considering the length of time the insurgency lasted they better be the moast knowledgable in the world. Even a leet counterstike player will take advice when the op plan intelligence is sketchy at best.
In Northern Ireland?
Why yes, I would say that after fighting terrorists for 30 years the British Army *would* be rather good at it :)

See the Aussies did it *right* - they drink cups of tea, are loyal to Her Maj, play Rugby Union and are a good laugh to go drinking with.
What's not to like?

Originally by: Zeba Even worse its an island. Exactly how are forein arms dealers supposed to get the good stuff to you in quantitys that will make a differece when the only points of entry will be heavily guarded ports and airports? Landing on a beach at night with the stuff? Riiiight.
That's exactly how they would do it.
You really have no idea just how much coastline the UK has and just how impossible it would be to patrol it all, do you?
Add to that hundreds of uninhabited islands off the coast and there are plenty of opportunities for getting weapons in.
The IRA seemed to have little difficulty in getting weapons for 30 years.

Easily done mate when you've been funded by the great old US of A throughout that time. Not only do America quite happily fund terrorists, train terrorists (Taliban) they also are the worlds biggest terrorists.
Can anybody name the largest single act of terrorism in history and tell me who it was carried out by?
I'm well aware of NORAID and various other orginisations that raised funds and sent money back to the "old country", but I'm specifically talking about getting the weapons AFTER you have the funds :)

Originally by: Zeba With the cold war detection infrastructure still moastly in place and a police state situation any ship that is not sqawking a fof transponder code will get intercepted and turned away or outright destroyed. They can do this now but as there isn't currently a police state in britain or the political will to use it you are correct atm.
Right, but the infrastructure was in place all through the Troubles and they were still able to acquire weapons.
Quote: As far as the IRA can they manage to smuggle in a few crates of ammo and guns in the current or past political and security climate? Sure.
It's a lot more than "ammo and guns". There were significant quantities of plastic explosives, rocket launchers, grenades, SAMs... everything you would need to launch a fairly successful guerilla campaign in the circumstances you describe.
Quote: In an ultimate freedom on the line situation would a few crates of ammo and guns make a difference? Hardly. You lost the fight on the day they turned out the lights as they set the troops up and no amount of smuggled arms will change that as it was a national mental state that allowed it to happen anyways.
The British Army were in Northern Ireland for 30 years yet paramilitaries were still able to operate and carry out bombings and killings even with a full security apparatus in place.
Look at the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan for a modern day comparison - even with a full occupying force, paramilitaries and militias are able to mount fairly effective campaigns against the occupiers.
I think you underestimate the difficulty of subduing a resistance.
